With Tracy McGrady signing for the veteran’s minimum of $1.35 million, the Detroit Pistons have a bit of a crowded house at small forward and shooting guard. Sources tell NBA.com that even though McGrady agreed to be the backup to Tayshaun Prince and Rip Hamilton, the team is likely to trade away one of them before the season starts. Prince is the more likely candidate since he is in the last year of his contract.
There is the quick update of the day.

Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony is a free agent next summer and he has told friends that he’s "eager to explore playing" for the New York Knicks when his contract is up, according to CBSSports.com. However, with a new collective bargaining agreement expected to be less lucrative for players next year, Anthony faces a dilemma: Does he take his chances as a free agent or does he sign a three-year, $65 million extension the Nuggets are offering now. CBSSports.com sources say that team owners are determined to "clamp down" on player salaries and player movement in the next CBA after all the free-agent nuttiness this summer.

Carmelo Anthony (notes) has one more year left on his contract with the Denver Nuggets before he can opt out of it and become an unrestricted free agent. The Nuggets are feeling like he may do just that and the team "is prepared to trade Melo rather than let him walk" next summer, according to a source for the Denver Post.

Minnesota Timberwolves forward/center Al Jefferson (notes) has been with the team since 2007 and has three more years (and $42 million) left on his contract. It appears the Timberwolves don’t want to be on the hook to pay all that dough to a 25-year-old man who averaged 17.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game last season.

The Mavericks’ front office fully expects Dirk Nowitzki to opt out of his contract July 1 and join the star-studded free agency brigade. There’s a faint hope that Dallas can agree to an extension with Nowitzki before then.
